Deleting and replacing an image

In some of our files, you might see some placeholders that are meant to be replaced, like the “Company Logo” image below.

1

Alternately, you might also want to replace one of the illustrations used in the piece, like the laptop illustration here:

2

Depending on where you’re grabbing what you’re replacing, you’ve got three different options—we’ll walk you through each of them below!

Replace an image by copying a new image from another PowerPoint:

  1. Open up another PowerPoint file with the new image you want to use.
  2. Select that image (if you need to ungroup the image and replace only a part of it, here’s how to do that).
  3. Right-click on the image, and choose “Copy”.
    3
  4. Open up the PowerPoint file with the image you want to replace.
  5. Right-click anywhere, and choose “Paste”.
    4
  6. The image was pasted in the slide. Move the new image close to the existing image.
    5
  7. You might need to resize the image to fit the location. To do that:
    1. Hold down “Shift” on your keyboard. (This will keep the aspect ratio the same.)
    2. Drag one of the corners of the new image to the size you need it to be.
    3. Let go of “Shift” and the corner of the image.
  8. Select the image you want to replace, and hit “Delete” on your keyboard.
  9. Move the new image in its place.

Replace an image by dragging in an existing file on your computer:

  1. Open the folder on your desktop with the image you want to use.
  2. Make sure your PowerPoint file is open and visible.

  3. Click, and hold-down on the image, and drag the image onto the PowerPoint file.
    7
  4. The image was pasted! Move the new image close to the existing image. (You might need to resize to bring it closer to the size of the original image.)
    5
  5. Select the image you want to replace, and hit “Delete” on your keyboard.
  6. Move the new image in its place.

Replace an image by uploading an existing image from your computer:

  1. Select the image you want to replace.
  2. Right-click, and choose “Change Picture”, then “From a File”.
    8
  3. Browse your files to find the image you want to upload in place of this one, and choose “Insert”.9
  4. The image was pasted in place of the original image!

Tip: This last method is really useful if the new image has the same proportions as the original image, and if you want to keep the new image in the exact same place. After you replace the image, you can adjust its size or placement if needed.
